ARTIST STATEMENT

To me there is nothing more seductive than a clean sheet of watercolor paper and a brush loaded with paint. It allows me to record my response to the fleeting, ethereal beauty that I find in life. It may be the light patterns on the surface of water or the fragile blond hairs blowing across the face of a child or the opulent, elegant surfaces of a Mardi Gras mask. These glints of beauty are the things I try to capture on the page.

After ten years of painting and completing my MFA in oils, I turned to watercolors as a change of pace. I found the freshness and fluid intensity of watercolor to be harmonious to the images I love. The compositions emphasize a strong sense of light and color that speak of the balance between energy and peace. The subjects can vary from figurative to nature to still life rendered in a realistic style.

When Robert Frost was asked how he starts a poem he said, “It usually starts with a lump in my throat”. When I start a painting it usually starts with something too beautiful for my heart to contain.
